Hawick Linden 19

Berwick 26

Having lost 64-6 in a league game at Berwick just three weeks ago, the signs were ominous ahead of this opening BT Borders Regional Shield match.

Berwick got the first try, breaking from a Linden drive, Roy McFarlane touching down and Shane Armstrong converting.

Linden responded with a Kirk Ford penalty, before another big drive from Berwick’s own 22 ended in a try for Armstrong, who also converted.

Graham Colville’s try reduced the deficit to 8-14, but Berwick came back with two quickfire tries, from Gareth Black and Gareth Hill, the latter converted by Armstrong.

Linden’s comeback began with another Ford penalty before half-time.

The second period was played almost entirely in the Berwick half. Colville pounced to go over for his second try and another Ford penalty reduced the leeway to one converted try. The Royal Blues just couldn’t conjure up another score, although they certainly tried.
