RBS EAST DIVISION ONE
John Smith reports from Milntown
A HARD-working display against a determined Portobello outfit saw Langholm secure their first win of the season in the East Regional League.
The Milntown men made the ideal start when Portobello were offside from their kick-off. From the resultant scrum, home flyhalf Keith Davidson kicked deep, and speedy winger Gavin Campbell was up to scramble over for a try in the corner. Niall Cubbon struck the difficult conversion between the uprights.
There were some worrying times for the home side as Portobello punched holes in their defence, but the home men managed to keep the visitors at bay.
Langholm were defending for a while, but fullback Colin Jardine was a solid last line and he often gave his team a foothold upfield with fine line kicks.
Cubbon put Langholm 10-0 up with a successful penalty before a neat chip through by the visitors secured a try which they failed to convert and it was 10-5 at the break.
Shortly after the restart, Cubbon increased the home lead with a penalty.
Portobello had a chance to go for goal, but went for the quick tap and run and were held out. Langholm also ran a penalty, but at the second opportunity Cubbon stepped up and slotted between the posts.
The visitors kicked a simple penalty to make the score 16-8.
Langholm were the better side in the latter exchanges and Cubbon kicked another penalty in the closing minutes.
