WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE
HAVING now finished top of Premier Two, Melrose took a huge stride towards the elite “top six” in Scotland with this emphatic promotion play-off win over their much higher-ranked opponents Dundee.
Lana Skeldon led the way as she barged over for a hat-trick of tries, but there was much more to this game in terms of a magnificent team performance as the visitors gave their best all-round 80-minute display of the season.
Such was the Melrose domination in many areas that the score could have doubled had not the home side benefitted from a number of crucial 50/50 refereeing decisions, especially when Melrose drove over the line to be denied on a number of occasions.
With Melrose tackling like demons, the bigger Dundee ladies were never allowed to settle as they hit a rock-solid defence which only cracked once to allow their international centre to dance round a number of opponents and set up their consolation score.
Turning to face the wind only 5-0 ahead at half-time Melrose dug deep, and prompted into the right areas by Halfpenny’s astute kicking, were able to subdue the home side and run out much deserved winners.
Many stood out, but Megan McIver and Kirsty Stewart were joint players of the match for their all-round contribution.
Scorers: Lana Skeldon (3), Lorna Doyle. Nicola Halfpenny kicked the conversion.
