WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE PLAY-OFFS

ANOTHER fine team performance saw Melrose cement their place at the top of the play-off group with a second convincing win over higher-ranked opposition.

At full strength for the first time this season they won in a 10-try canter, dominating the injury-hit students from the start with powerful forward play.

Two early tries from Lana Skeldon, following some surging drives, set the tone for the match that the visitors could never match despite some spirited defence.

On the rare occasions that Edinburgh threatened, they were engulfed by solid Melrose tackling, leaving them visibly shaken and bereft of ideas.

Leading 31-0 at the break and having been expecting a stronger challenge, the foot came off the gas a little, but Melrose were still able to run in a further five tries as the students tired.

Player of match was Lana Skeldon.

Next up is Kirkcaldy at home, when the group will be decided.

Scorers: Gillian Inglis (5), Lana Skeldon (2), Kirsty Cook (2) and Gillian Thomson. Nicola Halfpenny kicked three conversions.

Melrose: K. Cook; R. McCann, G. Inglis, L. Skeldon, K. Stewart; N. Halfpenny, S. McKenna; L. Doyle, L. Purves, M. Maciver, C. Macfarlane, J. Hall, E. Hackney, G. Thomson, H. Rorrison. Subs: D, Durham, L, Gilchrist, M. Young and T. Elms.
