WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE

LIFE in the top flight is proving to be a rollercoaster ride for Melrose as they returned to winning ways with this hard-earned victory.

Quickly into their stride against yet another big side, Melrose reached a 19-0 lead before their continuing injury jinx struck again. A front row reshuffle was required after a scrum collapse and ’Sonians clawed back into the game at 19-5 to end the half, and to 19-10 immediately after the restart.

With many playing out of position as more injuries necessitated further changes, the home side knuckled down and after a terrific long-range drop goal from Nicola Halfpenny settled the nerves, they ground out a fine win. ’Sonians refused to lie down and battered their way through some resolute defence for another two tries.

Melrose scorers: Lauren Harris (2), Gillian Inglis, Gillian Thomson, and a penalty try. Nicola Halfpenny converted four and kicked a drop goal.
