On a wet and windy Friday evening, National League outfit Jed-Forest played host to Premiership title chasers Melrose in the Booker Border League.
Using the game to introduce a number of younger players, the visitors eventually ran out winners by scoring four tries to the hosts’ one.
It was the forward platform which was the major difference between the sides, where the dominant Melrose pack always had the upper hand.
In typical Riverside fashion, however, the hosts never gave up and it was not until well into the second half that the game was put beyond the reach of the Jed men.
Ruaridh Knott, Ewan McQuillan, Blair Hutchison and Bruce Colvine all touched down for Melrose, with Joe Helps converting three, while Ross Combe scored Jed’s only try after Fraser Harkness put in one of his typically mazy runs. Donald Grieve converted.
