Melrose Ladies 24
Edinburgh Wanderers 50
WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE
Melrose were left to rue a fatal 10-minute spell at the start of the second half when runaway league leaders Edinburgh rattled in four tries which proved to be the difference between the teams.
Having turned round only 17-14 behind at the break, the result failed to do justice to a fine effort from the home team, who suffered a number of injuries but managed to reshuffle and regroup to give Wands a contest.
Good possession won by the forwards saw the backs create enough space to exploit the pace of Lauren Harris – named in the Scotland team alongside fellow Melrose player Lana Skeldon to face the Netherlands this Sunday – who ran in four tries. Nicola Halfpenny converted two of the touchdowns.
In the end, the visitors were just that bit sharper all round and deservedly hung on to their top spot, but Melrose proved their right to be in the top tier.
