HAWICK’S poor start to the season continued at Raeburn Place on Saturday when they lost to an average home team, who also secured a bonus point with four tries.

The visitors did win some ball, but seemed to lack the confidence and guile to score tries. This was certainly a display they will want to forget quickly with local derbies the next two weeks at home to Gala then away to Melrose.

Ruaridh Bonner opened the scoring for Accies with a penalty goal before Jake Knight, their debutant winger from Australia, had a brace of tries to give the home team a 13-0 lead at the interval.

The Greens deserved a try just before the break, following good work from forwards and backs, but Nick Mactaggart was stopped just short of the line.

Midway through the second period, Accies’ second row Greg Campbell scored from short range, which was converted by Bonner from far out. Accies bagged their bonus-point try after Knight again ran through a weak defence to touch down.

Head coach Rocky Johnstone and interim coach Jim Renwick have a job building confidence into the players who need to step up their desire to win in a Green jersey.
