With only four local teams in action over the weekend due to the frost, Stuart Cameron took the opportunity to look at the Borders Rugby Rankings for the season so far

For the third year running data from the Premiership and National Leagues, so that each team plays the same amount of games at the same standard to ensure a level playing field, has been collated to form the highly popular rankings system.

With the seven Borders Premiership sides playing 18 games in the league and the local National League teams playing 22, the 11 home-based teams have been split up this season, so there will be a separate award for the best National League outfit for 2010/2011.

In the National League Hawick YM continue to stretch away in prolific fashion, winning all 13 games and look a shoo-in for the local team of the year trophy in the National League section, but it’s Gala who head Melrose in the Premier Team list with 54 points to 52. Coaches George Graham and Scott Nichol are understandably proud of their side who are targeting promotion to Premier One next season.

Neil McColm has 18 tries for Hawick YM, but played for the Greens recently and so wasn’t able to increase his total for the Redskins, but Lee Armstrong scored 16 points at Highland to stretch his lead in the Most Points category and is heading for the 200 points mark.

His nearest rival is Matthew Hackett (Berwick), while in the Premier Points list it’s still close with Neil Warnock of Peebles in front on 140. Scott Wight and Lee Millar have 125 and 124 respectively, with David Cassidy the only other Premier player to go into three figures this season.

In the East League Duns are having a ding-dong battle with Gala YM, and their win on Saturday at home to Portobello puts them three points clear.

With only Kelso and Jed-Forest playing league games in the Premiership this year so far, it means that Kelso’s Andrew Haig has taken the opportunity to jump into joint second place in the try-scoring table behind runaway leader Fraser Thomson of Melrose. Fraser is on 12 but Andrew now has eight, as do Fraser Harkness (Selkirk), Darren Gillespie and Gregor Young (Jed-Forest), and Stuart Hogg (Hawick).
