A CUP match set up in the name of a Gala Red Triangle player who tragically died earlier this year helped raise £1,600 for the youth rugby club.
A crowd of around 850 gathered at Netherdale last Friday for the inaugural Matt Lochrie Memorial Cup between Gala Red Triangle under-15s and their Melrose counterparts.
Fourteen-year-old Matt was a popular member of the Triangle’s under-15 squad when he died in January.
The match was organised by his coach Jamie Dewar, with Gala suitably triumphing 29-25.
Jamie told TheSouthern: “I would like to thank everyone who helped out and all the local businesses who supported the game.”
The cup is scheduled to be contested annually at the end of the season.
