Earlston High School have booked their place in the semi final of the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Under 18 Plate for the Borders/East Lothian region, writes Alan Lorimer.

In a match that produced periods of quality rugby, the Borders outfit were deserved winners, despite having to battle against a heavier North Berwick set of forwards.

Earlston established an early lead with a solo try by Klein, but North Berwick replied quickly with a converted try by their district centre Alex McKay. Thereafter the hosts took control scoring before the break, with a try by Chalmers converted by Runciman from Klein’s break and then adding second-half scores by full back Paul Henney, converted by Chalmers, who then created and converted a try for Klein.

North Berwick, however, had the final say in points scoring with a second try, this time winger Lewis Edgar making the best of an overlap.

As a result, Earlston will now face their Border rivals Hawick High School in the semi final of the competition. The other semi final will be between Preston Lodge High School and Peebles High School making an all Border final a possible outcome. Thereafter the winner will progress to the national quarter finals.
