NATIONAL DIVISION ONE
JOHN SMITH reports from Milntown
LANGHOLM recorded their first league win of the season against a stuffy Garnock side.
The hosts started strongly and took play to the visitors with some clever kicks from skipper Niall Cubbon and fly half Keith Davidson.
From a scrum 10m from the Garnock line, the ball was transferred along the backs. Full back Alasdair Cavers joined the line at pace and collected a neatly floated pass to swallow-dive in at the corner. Cubbon added the touchline conversion.
Shortly after, Cubbon went in to score, but his conversion attempt faded past. At the end of the first quarter, Cubbon added a long-range penalty.
Garnock secured a try from a rolling maul. The visitors missed the conversion, but added a penalty, which was replied to by Cubbon and it was 18-8 at half-time.
The second half saw Garnock finally put together some good rugby and the Milntown men had to defend stoutly.
The visitors had Langholm in trouble at the scrums but opted to kick for goal and had one success out of two attempts, narrowing the gap to seven points.
In the last minute, Cubbon sent a penalty just wide, but instead of touching down to secure the losing bonus point, the Garnock fullback tried to run out of defence. When he was tackled a further penalty was awarded, which Cubbon slotted between the uprights.
