Berwick were looking to maintain their unbeaten record in this Borders regional competition and retain the Shield for another year.
A Shane Armstrong penalty gave The Blacks an early three points, however, it was the visitors who scored a breakaway try to take the lead. It wasn’t long before the Quins added another three points to their tally when they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts.
For the next 25 minutes the seasiders put sustained pressure on the visitors’ try line and only some staunch defending from the plucky Hawick side kept The Blacks from scoring. The constant Berwick pressure was starting to take its toll on the Quins’ players and in the 35th minute Neil Graham forced his way over the Hawick line to score Berwick’s first try.
This seemed to unsettle the Teries and further tries from Jamie Pick and Dan Law, converted by Shane Armstrong, gave the hosts a 22-8 half-time lead.
Following a surge by the Quins at the start of the second half, Berwick finally got back into gear and tries from Lee Douglas, Jack Webster, Armstrong, Gareth Hill and Graham, with three conversions by Armstrong, made up the final scoreline.
