Olympian effort from junior Harriers at Tweedbank

GALA HARRIERS’ junior section enjoyed their own mini Olympics, to celebrate Team GB’s success in late August.

Competing at Tweedbank on a warm autumn evening brought out the best of efforts from all young athletes participating.

Across the disciplines, gutsy performances rivalling those of Greg Rutherford, Usain Bolt and David Rudisha resulted in gold, silver and bronze medals for the podium places in each of the categories.

Looking back over the summer, Gala Harriers athletes have been in action up and down the country and over the border across a variety of terrains and distances. The biggest turnout was for Teviotdale Harriers’ 10k in late August, with 13 Gala seniors recording times ranging from 38 minutes and 51 seconds to 52.53.

Glasgow’s Great Scottish Run in early September attracted some half marathon virgins who posted creditable times, as well as some old timers in the Great North Run in mid-September.

Eileen Nicol and Margot Crosbie headed to Dumfries on a fine and breezy day last weekend and both had excellent runs over the hilly but scenic half marathon course, coming home in 1 hour 38 minutes and 1.39 respectively.

Gala Harriers’ AGM in September looked back over a successful year of both competition and development and can anticipate similar outcomes in the year ahead under new president Gerry Moss.
