HAWICK golf sensation, Lesley Atkins, 17, continues to be a driving force on the Scottish golf scene with two high-profile victories.

She notched the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Schoolgirls Golf Championship, played over the Murrayshall House Hotel courses near Perth, and the inaugural Independent Schools’ Golf Association Scottish Open, which took place at King’s Acre in Edinburgh, in the space of a week.

Former Scottish girls champion Atkins pipped Heather Munro (Dundee City) and Jessica Meek (Angus) for the individual girls’ title with a three-under-par second round of 68 over the Murrayshall No 1 course.

That gave her a 36-hole total of 141, a shot ahead of both Heather and Jessica. Prior to that, the former Wilton Primary School pupil had secured victory at the premier independent schools one-day stroke play event which is open to any pupil at an independent school.

Atkins, who attends Loretto School in Edinburgh and is a member of their golf academy, was the winner of the individual girls’ competition with an impressive gross score of 75.

Jonathan Hewat, director of external affairs at Loretto commented: “This is a tremendous achievement for Lesley.

“It was a rare sunny day in Edinburgh which made the inaugural ISGA Scottish Open a great day of golf with competitive young players from schools all over the UK competing for the silverware.”
