Depleted men start well
Fjordhus Reivers 7
EAST MENS DIVISION ONE
FJORDHUS Reivers men’s team opened their league campaign with a tricky visit to Goldenacre to face old foes Alloa.
With a depleted squad, the Reivers were relying on new combinations to mould together a cohesive unit.
The game started well for the visitors with possession dominated. While the Reivers tried to use intricate passing moves and feed the ball wide, Alloa preferred a more direct route.
After a sustained 10 minutes of pressure with chances being passed up by the Borderers it was up to defender Scott Girvan to open the scoring. The ball drilled into the circle before a deft touch sent it past the keeper. The Reivers built on this almost immediately with Gareth Roberts carrying on his fine pre-season form with another goal.
The pressure was telling on the home defence soon after with a series of shots fired at the body of the keeper and finally being lifted over and into the net by Callum Stockdale.
Another raid into the circle found a foot and a shot corner was given. After an initial mix-up at the top of the D, it fell to Roberts again to rifle the ball home. As if that wasn’t good enough Roberts completed his first-half hat-trick with a penalty flick after a foot on the line denied him from an earlier shot on goal.
With the half-time score at 5-0 it was a fairly easy team talk for captain Jonathan Fletcher: “Keep the game simple and tight and we will win.”
The aim of the second half was to maintain the clean sheet.
Alloa promptly drove the ball into the circle and deflected it past the keeper. When they added a second in very similar fashion soon after there was a slight wavering in the confidence of the Borderers.
However another good move swept the ball to Callum Stockdale at the back post who slotted the ball past the keeper with the minimum of fuss.
This should have settled the Reivers but it seemed to have the opposite effect with Alloa repeating their two-goal trick to bring the score back to 6-4.
However, Roberts was not finished terrorising the home defence, as he had for most of the match. He carried the ball into the circle and round the keeper to ensure there was no chance of comeback.
It was a win, though a sloppy second half almost let the points slip away. The Reivers know they will have to up their game to continue winning in this league.
