BERWICKSHIRE Group RDA Vaulting team were crowned National Champions at Hartpury, near Gloucester, and were presented with the Fred Trophy.

The sextet – Christopher Lyons, Jamie Bromley, Stacey MacPherson, Lisa Borthwick, Robert Cummings and Jaymis Coston – performed a solid set of compulsories and a foot-perfect freestyle on Mambys Murphy, owned by Philip Hewit and lunged by Anna Marie MacPherson.

This success would not have been possible without the wonderful help from parents and group supporters.

The group had other successes at the championships, including two second prizes in the musical ride competition.

The Wednesday morning riders who took part in the Drill Ride, “Marching Together”, were Kelvin Payne, Mary Carmichael, Johnny Alexander, Finian Green and John Doherty.

In the teamed ride, “Dancing Queen”, were Janet Rutherford, Dianne Shelly, Kenneth Wilson and Shaun Douglas, with Carol Mercer as the Dancing Queen.

The Berwickshire High School Thursday group also had success in the arts and crafts competition with their attractive sculpture being awarded second prize. It was made by Adrian Purvis, Lisa Borthwick, Trevor Hanley and Daniel Yule.

Barbara Berkowitz had a well-deserved sixth place in dressage class eight, riding Mambys Murphy, and Anne Hutchinson on Aspen Delikat did well in their first visit to the championships and competed in the largest class in the whole competition.
