Who is your top local sporting team of the past year?

Teamwork is the main focus this week as we take a look at the last of the three public vote categories at this year’s Border Sport and Leisure Celebration of Sport Awards, supported by GB Telecom.

After much deliberation, the judging panel has whittled numerous worthy candidates down to three outstanding teams who have all excelled throughout the 2013 season.Two teams of mixed youngsters will take on a team of senior sportsmen in this section with the final decision being left to the Borders public.

Let the battle commence.

Borders Elite Swim team have gone from strength to strength over the last few years and exceeded all previous records at Scottish National, Scottish Age Group and District level as well as being able to boast their first ever European medallist.

After being promoted to Division One of the JSB Plumbing Forth Valley League the previous season the 2012-13 East District Cross-Country League brought further success for Team Borders Athletes with an amazing five of the seven age-group trophies coming back to the region.

Elsewhere, Melrose Bowling Club was enjoying a grand summer on the greens with their Top Ten team achieving National honours for the first time ever.

Gordon Brown, managing director of sponsors GB Telecom told The Southern: “Sports groups play such a positive role in the Borders area.The Team of the Year award is proof that the Borders has a rich and talented sporting community.”

The winners of all of the categories of the Borders Sport and Leisure Celebration of Sport Awards will be revealed at a special evening ceremony at the MacDonald Cardrona Hotel on Friday, February 28.

Tickets cost £35 and includes canapés, drinks on arrival, three-course dinner with wine and after-dinner coffee.
