Dumfries beat St Boswells by 36 runs
WITH Dumfries being a Western Premier League team, it was always going to be a David vs Goliath task facing St Boswells as they travelled away for the first round of the national competition.
However, they got off to a tremendous start with two quick wickets, both caught sharply in the cover/point region.
Beveridge and McCutcheon steadied the ship and in typical 20/20 fashion took the attack back to the visiting bowlers.
Chinniah Prabhakar eventually caught both of them, for 55 and 43 respectively, before Bellwood joined the fun, notching a quick 34.
Disaster struck for the Villagers when their talisman captain Stephen Broom injured his side while bowling, an injury that would prevent him from batting in the reverse innings, but despite this, some accurate bowling from Cletus Mathurin slowed the pace at the end to leave Dumfries with 157 for 6 in their 20 overs.
St Boswells were now faced with a tall order and, with the void of Broom in their batting order, their hopes all but faded when three quick wickets fell for 16 runs.
However, while West Indies amateur Mathurin was at the crease there was still hope and he and Rich Young steadily rebuilt with the former proving the aggressor.
A rare rank long hop that should have been heading for Lockerbie was mishit high into the air and McCutcheon took the catch to leave Mathurin out for 30 and the visitors on 46-4.
What followed was a spirited fightback by the lower order who all contributed in posting a respectable total of 121 for 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs, Young just missing out on a half-century, on 46 not out.
