St Boswells welcomed an understrength Dunfermline to the Green on Saturday, with some stunning weather greeting the visitors.

Due to their captain quitting the previous night, however, it was going to take more than some glorious weather to brighten the mood of the Division One table props.

The Villagers were therefore delighted to win the toss and bat first.

The first 20 overs was a steady affair, the away bowlers bowling tight and openers Elliot and Scott (both Ruthvens) playing it sensibly, scoring 70 runs.

Scott then accelerated before being unlucky to play on for 88.

Stephen Broom then joined the fun with 20 overs to go and let rip with probably the quickest hundred the Green has ever seen, the first 50 coming off 24 balls and the second off 26.

Windows were hit, balls were lost, and the many social drinkers were having to dodge leather on a regular basis.

With Broom causing havoc, Ruthven at the other end was gradually chipping away towards his first century in the ESCA. As Broom finished on 107 not out, Elliot fell agonisingly short by three runs. The 17-year-old couldn’t complain too much, seeing as he scored 119 last Sunday, 85 not out on Thursday and 97 not out on the day. With this, and a few other things, “best week of my life” was his comment.

St Boswell’s 313 for one was never in doubt during Dunfermline’s reply. Wickets fell regularly and only some late resistance from the tail-enders kept the game going into the 40th over, the away side finishing on 102 all out.

This 211-run victory keeps St Boswells in the top half of the table with four wins out of six.
