THE South of Scotland Select Team are delighted to have been chosen to represent Great Britain in the junior team class at the European Championships, to be held in Slovakia from August 1-5.
A team of six will be chosen from the current squad of eight vaulters who have been training together all winter, with this as their ultimate aim.
Last year, the squad finished as advanced team champions at the British Championships and have built on that success with a close second place to the German team in a competition in France in April.
The team are all vaulters from the Borders region and ply their trade in their local clubs, Reivers Vaulting Group, based at Reston, or Scottish Borders Vaulters, based at Ancrum.
Aspen Delikat is the team horse and has been for just over a year.
He is 23 years old and owned by Berwickshire Group RDA, where his real job is a regular RDA horse. The team consider themselves lucky to have the use of him for this, his second championships, having travelled to the 2011 Europeans with Stacey Macpherson as an individual.
The squad is Stacey Macpherson, Lucy Younger, Shannon Purves, Rebecca Kinghorn, Charlie Lochead, Sophie Aitchison, Emma Counsell and Izzy Kyle, and at present they are out competing in the CVIO in Aachen, Germany, as a very important practice run for the Europeans.
The vaulters have a huge fund-raising effort going on and have the following events planned: a ceilidh in Kelso Rugby Club (July 6); a quiz in Lauder (July 14); a demo night at Reston (July 18); and a bingo night in Eccles Village Hall (July 20).
