BORDERS Under-13s teams are getting their seasons off to a fine start.
The league got underway in bright sunshine with victories for Gala, Hawick, Kelso and a very young Melrose team.
Both Melrose and Gala were simply too strong for their opponents.
Melrose’s win was an all-round team effort in the field that owed much to Will Owen and Connell Howerd’s 30 not-outs apiece.
Robbie Irvine (Gala) notched-up his first 30 not-out of the season and Gala’s skipper Jack Halls put in all-round performance of 31 not out and then five wickets for just one run, but the game’s notable showing was the league’s first hat-trick (all bowled) by the diminutive Ryan Legge.
First round scores: Melrose (102-6) beat Manderston (37-6) by 65 runs; Gala (124-3) beat St Boswells (16ao) by 108 runs; Selkirk conceded – unable to raise a team; Hawick (64-4) beat Biggar/Peebles (63-7) by six wickets.
On Sunday, Gala continued their fine form with a visit to Dumfries in the preliminary round of the Under-13s Scottish Cup. Batting first, Irvine and Halls put on 87 for the first wicket to set up a competent 120-2 for Dumfries to chase.
This was too much for Dumfries as they could only manage 95 in response, thanks mainly to a miserly spell of four overs, 3-12 by Elliott Mitchell. They now host local rivals Kelso in the first round. The other first round ties involving Borders teams are: Hawick v Melrose and Peebles v Heriot’s.
