Tweedsiders too strong for Teries

HAWICK AND WILTON played host to Kelso at Buccleuch Park and upon winning the toss the away side decided to bat first.

It was the homesters who got off to the better start, though, when Greg Baillie clean-bowled Thomas Grindall with the visitors on eight runs. However, this led to the partnership of Douglas Wilson and Jason Gibson, who batted sensibly and punished anything short or wide.

With the score on 83, Baillie claimed his second of three wickets, Wilson nicking one back to wicket keeper Allan Moffat. This only brought Kelso’s Aussie pro Tim Wightman to the crease, who patiently kept the scoreboard ticking over, until Baillie found the edge of his bat.

Craig Macdougall was brought on to see if he could contain the Kelso onslaught, and he did, by first bowling Steven Patterson and then having Stuart Cessford caught in the slips by Neil Storey.

Macdougall then ran out Michael Henderson in comical fashion. After being warned about leaving his crease during the bowler’s run up, Henderson continued to steal a couple of yards, and in doing so found Macdougall sending him back to the pavilion.

On the last ball of the Kelso innings Baillie ran out the last batsman leaving a total of 182 to chase down in the allocated overs.

Hawick’s innings got off to a bad start when a mix-up in the middle saw Baillie run out for one. Things turned from bad to worse as Benny Hartop nicked one back to the Kelso wicket keeper, as did Moffat, who top-scored with 13. With the score on 21-5 Hawick needed a miracle.

Bruce Mactaggart, scored 11, with a couple of hefty blows. Declan Solley, who had batted for an exceptionally long time, finally departed being trapped lbw for 11. The only other batsman to reach double figures was Stuart Hair, scoring 12 with some textbook cover drives before Kelso finally wrapped things up with the Teries all out for 67.
