WITH one League Cup fixture to go before Christmas, Borders pool players turned their collective eye towards the League Triples last week with the qualifiers on Monday and the final played out on Sunday at the Fleece, Selkirk.
The qualifiers saw great results for both the High Level and Reivers B as two teams from both triumphed. Reivers’ Kev Mackay, Chris Wildig and Craig Moir cruised through at Hawick, while Scott Bowers, Scott Simpson and Craig Reid made light of a tough draw at Niki’s. High Levels’ Jim Hume, Patrick Wallace and Terry Storrie played well, as did Stuart Brown, Craig Cottrell and Jason Lyall, also going through at Hawick.
In the round robin final, the first games saw both High Level trios blow a two-frame lead to lose 3-2 somewhat unluckily. In the second phase Bowers, Simpson and Reid blew away their teammates while Brown, Cottrell and Lyall disposed of their stable pals. The last phase saw Bowers, Simpson and Reid clinch the title with a resounding 3-0 defeat of a plucky Hume’s Level team while Brown’s Level team clinched second spot by edging past Reivers’ second string headed by Craig Moir.
Speaking on behalf of the winning team, Craig Reid told TheSouthern: “ While we were strong favourites all the games were evenly poised and could have gone either way.
“In the end experience told against worthy opponents, but we were very relieved to cross the winning line. We would all like to thank the Fleece for providing a great venue for the occasion.”
