Kelso High School S2 girls were the toast of the Borders after once again taking on boys’ teams across Perthshire and winning.

The annual S2 tour took place over three days earlier this month, with the Kelso squad of 32 girls accompanied by organiser Mrs Weir, fellow PE teacher Miss McHale and parent coach David Ferguson.

The girls faced Dunfermline High School on the way up and won one match and lost the other in very competitive games.

Next, they took on Perth Grammar School and faced a strong club boys’ team as well as mixed sides in a series of matches. Kelso were undaunted and a superb piece of team play set up striker Aimee Gillie, and she produced a superb first-time finish to seal a 1-0 win. The three Kelso teams went on to win three more games from the six matches in all, with every single girl contributing to the victories.

The match with Kinross High School was called off due to a flooded pitch, but Perth High School stepped into the breach. It meant a match against S3/S4 male-dominated teams and though they lost, the Kelso youngsters stood up well to the challenge.

After the excitement of
go-karting and bowls that night it was back to the pitches
the following day and
entry to the Perthshire Secondary Schools tournament. Kelso played well on a bitterly cold afternoon, defeating Perth Grammar, Perth Academy and Blairgowrie High School.

The hockey and sportsmanship of the Kelso HS squad was commented upon by host teachers, who invited Kelso to return again next year.

Mrs Weir added: “This squad maintained the highest standards both on and off the pitch. They were a great credit to Kelso High School and their families, and it was wonderful to hear the positive comments from the other schools who we thank for their hospitality.”
