I would like to congratulate Janet Jack and the Borders Hockey Development Group on their recent festival of hockey.
The event was very successful, great fun and it was brilliant to see all those youngsters with a stick in their hands.
I have always considered hockey to be my second family – it’s been by my side since school and I will always be grateful to my PE teacher who played hockey for a local club and introduced me to the sport.
So, when I see all these people coming along in all weather conditions to run around a pitch after a little ball it gives me a real buzz to know that hockey is still very much alive and kicking.
Our club (Stirling Wanderers) also has a great junior section who train before us on a Wednesday. Even at our age (!) we have had a great season. We have made new friends, the banter has been exceptional, of course, and last, but not least, we have enjoyed the hockey.
I had a little laugh to myself when I was watching all the young girls in your team enjoying their day, thinking: they don’t realise it yet but, if they keep that stick in their hands, the ball at their feet and their teammates by their side, what a fantastic lifelong road trip they are all on.
Well done Borders Hockey Development.
