KELSO Orchard male members competed for the Richie Allan Shield singles title in fine tennis weather.
In the semi-finals, Rene Coupek, winner two years ago, played against 16-year-old Fergus Myers.
Coupek’s experience proved too much for the gallant Myers when he came through 6-3 6-4. The other semi between Lee Brown and Ben Leslie proved to be the most entertaining and closest match of the day, with Brown holding his nerve in the final tie-break game and winning the match 6-2 4-6 10-7.
Last year’s runner-up, Brown was in inspired form in the final and his overall play was superb.
Although there were classic rallies and close games, the 18-year-old, who heads to Telford College this week to start a sports coaching course, was victorious 6-3 6-2. The consolation final was between brothers Paul and Callum Woodcock, with Callum winning 6-4 in the single-set match.
