Hawick Boxing Club is set to hold its annual show at Mansfield Park on April 10.

The club is billing the evening as a “Stars of the Future” event which will feature some of the best young boxing talent in Scotland and the north of England.

Tickets are selling well and club president Davie Fraser is confident boxing fans are in for a real treat.

He told The Southern: “This is going to be a great night of boxing.

“Not only are we going to showcase some of the club’s best young boxers, but we are set to feature top talent from other clubs both north and south of the border.”

Coach Gareth Walker said: “The lads are training hard.

“I’m hoping to have a couple of lads on from Galashiels Boxing Club as well, so that will widen the interest in the Borders.”

Tickets are available from coaches Gareth Walker on 07834 739994, Colin Purvis on 01450 218417, or from Thinkfitness in Hawick.

The Hawick club’s championship season came to an end in Motherwell on Saturday when Connor Sutherland dropped a unanimous decision in the 44kg 2002 schoolboy final.

Sutherland came up against a classy opponent in the shape of Kyle Kerr, a current Scottish champion from local club Forgewood.

And despite a gutsy performance, Sutherland had to settle for a silver medal.

The first round was close, but in the second, Kerr, a taller and rangier opponent, troubled the Hawick youngster with a long left jab and some brilliant footwork.

However, Sutherland was quickly in control in round three, driving his opponent onto the ropes on several occasions.

Sutherland scored with some tremendous head and body punching, which gave his opponent little chance of getting into his stride.

Speaking this week, coach Walker said: “This was a massive performance from Connor.

“He was boxing a current Scottish champion and without a doubt this young lad has a bright future in boxing.”
