Souters aided by good start

Cricket. Selkirk v St Boswells

JUST one game stands between Selkirk and a place in the 2011 League Cup final following a hard-fought, 45-run home victory over league leaders St Boswells on Saturday.

A win over Kelso – who have already been beaten by the Bossie boys – in two weeks’ time would set the Souters up nicely for a final against either Langholm or Gala.

Winning the toss, an understrength St Boswells team put Selkirk in to bat.

John Everitt and Greg Fenton got off to a great start, taking the score up to 49, albeit with several chances going begging for the Villagers.

Fenton went for 19, edging Kathryn White to Jack Chambers behind the stumps. When Rich Young bowled John Graham soon after for a duck, Selkirk had spoiled their good start at 52-2.

Rory Banks and John Everitt survived a few more catch chances and started to up the pace, taking the Souters into triple figures before Banks was caught and bowled by Bryan Potter for 31.

Everitt passed his 50 before falling to Jordan Broom’s off-spin for a match top-scoring 56, but Darren Fenton (24 not out) and Jordan Reid (19) added another 35 runs before a couple of late wickets fell.

Selkirk ended with a very competitive 165-7 off their 40 overs.

Steven Broom was getting St Boswells off to a solid start when Greg Fenton, bowling an impressive spell, sneaked one through the key man’s defences and he was bowled for 22.

When Jordan Reid picked up another couple of quick wickets by getting Young (5) and White (1), Bossie were 35-3 and in big trouble.

Greg Lane and Rory Elms started to recover the innings when veteran Malcolm Ford rolled back the years and snared Lane for 12. Jordan Broom (7) and then Elms (29), who had started to hit out, were Ford’s next victims and when he got Wilson caught for three and bowled Potter for 13, his five-wicket haul for only 17 runs was complete – the visitors teetering on 101-8.

Some lower order resistance from Gavin Deans and Chambers delayed the inevitable before Deans was bowled for 11, the Villagers finishing on 120 all out.
