TWO Borders hockey players have been proving a point or two at the Under-18 European Championships in Santander, Spain.
Selkirk’s Emily Newlands and Kelso’s Claire Hill came away from the tournament with silver medals after helping the Scottish team gain a place in the finals where they were defeated by a strong host outfit.
Scotland won their pool by defeating the Italians 4-0 and securing a 1-1 draw against Poland.
In a hard-fought semi they beat Ukraine 3-2, with Hill hitting the winning goal from the penalty spot to ensure that the side guaranteed promotion to the EuroHockey Under-18 Championship two years from now, regardless of the outcome in the final.
The Scots fought back from being behind twice in the match, with equalising goals coming from Waverley Miller and Newlands to cancel out strikes from the Ukrainians.
The silver medal came after a 2-0 defeat against the hosts who scored a total of 22 goals, only conceding three, on their way to the final.
