A SELKIRK HIGH SCHOOL girls’ team came close to lifting silverware at a Borders schools tennis outing last Friday.

Sides from the Royal Burgh competed in both the boys’ and girls’ events at Kelso Tennis Club.

The girls consisted of Annabel and Emily Watson, Alex Clarkson and Nicole Thompson, and played in a round robin with another three teams.

Going into the last match, the girls had won three out of their five games and were in with a chance of victory. However, after two hard-hitting games, both doubles pairs narrowly lost out and Berwickshire High went on to win the overall tournament, with Selkirk High School second overall.

Harry Watson, Josh Thompson, Darren Knox and Donald Nichol made up the boys’ team. Although slightly younger than the other competitors, they stuck in before losing three out of four group games. As a result they did not qualify for the semi-finals and played a consolation match against Peebles. Winners of the boys’ tournament were Galashiels Academy.
