IT IS now 26 years since the first few hardy individuals took part in what is now the very popular annual New Year’s Day Muckle Toon Whisky Run, writes John Smith.
Last year there was a good turnout of 45 runners and walkers at the Langholm event, and it will be no surprise if there is even more this time on Sunday morning, January 1, 2012.
Andy Render of Annan AC won the race last year with a time of 60 minutes and nine seconds over the 8.5-mile course and collected the bottle of whisky. Stewart Pool from Bentpath was second in 61.21 and Alan Reville of Annan AC was third in 65.02.
Charlie Borthwick of Langholm, who last won in 2010, still holds the course record of 46.49.
The run starts from the health centre car park and goes the usual course to Burnfoot Bridge and back to the Lang Fauld. All runners and walkers are required to calculate their own starting time with an aim to finish at around 11am.
The fastest runner gets a bottle of whisky and there will be another bottle of whisky for the winner of the prize draw. The entry fee is £2, and anyone wishing more information can contact organiser Charlie Graham on 013873 81224.
