SCOTTISH YOUTH CUP

Peebles played host to Helensburgh’s G84 squad on Sunday in their qualifying section of the Scottish Youth Cup.

And if the visitors were expecting their trip to be a pleasurable one, Peebles had other ideas.

The Tweeddale outfit stamped their authority on the match from the start with moves flowing well from midcourt to the shooters.

West Linton’s Kerri Dow was in fine form, ably supported by Sarah Hudson, dominating in centre, leading the breaks and upsetting the opposition with skilful interceptions.

A comfortable Peebles lead of 14-0 enabled some early substitutions to be made in the second quarter. Confident, clean play from Emma Axon in wing attack sharpened the Borderers’ moves around the shooting D, with some well-judged lobs into the circle creating many opportunities for the shooters. Peebles’ lead extended to 18-0 by half-time with G84 yet to take a shot at goal.

There was no let-up in the second half, with captain Gemma Gass producing one of her best performances, contributing to several turnovers and playing deep to take advantage of the chances they produced. Going into the final stage with a 28-goal lead Peebles refused to give G84 any leeway, with Shevaun Smith and Alana Craigmile working well in tandem, stepping up their pace to secure another 13 goals and contributing to Peebles’ runaway victory.

The match completed the yongsters’ qualifying games in the cup with the Borderers emerging section winners, and gaining a place in the semi-finals.
