JOHN Brownlee made a match-winning return to cricket to guide Gala 2nds to a five-wicket win at Melrose in the Border Reserve League on Sunday.

The club’s former chairman, playing his first match for more than two years, picked up three wickets for 21 runs as Melrose slumped from 80 for 1 off 15 overs to 125 all out. Callum Chisholm top scored for Melrose with 32. Brownlee then scored an unbeaten 44 not out to save Gala, after the visitors had lost their first four wickets cheaply.

Wicket keeper Duncan Millar also batted well to notch 47.
