JUNIOR badminton players from the Borders did well when battling it out in Perth for the Scottish Secondary Schools Championships.

Catherine McQuarrie (Berwickshire HS) was the only player to make it through to the third round of the knockout competition, with Fraser Young (Kelso HS) in the singles, and in the doubles with partner Jack Logan (Kelso HS), making it through to the second round.

Gavin McQuarrie (Earlston HS) took top seed Mark Leith to three sets before losing out. He went on to reach the third round of the plate competition.

The rest (all from Berwickshire HS) lost their first-round matches, but went into the plate competitions where several made it to the quarter-final stages.

Coach Lynn Young told TheSouthern: “This was a good experience for all the youngsters and it showed them that they need to maintain their commitment to practice if they want to progress on to compete against these more established players from other regions who practice three to four times per week.”
