SCOTTISH SCHOOLS CUP QUARTER-FINALS
WITH Peebles S1 and S2 school teams already safely through to the semi-finals of the Scottish Schools’ Cup, Peebles S3s travelled to Arbroath to make their bid.
The Borderers started well with some dominating mid-court play creating several attacking breaks. Despite a very strong Arbroath defence, Peebles led 9-6 by quarter time.
With 12 minutes of the match to play and the score at 22-22, Arbroath began to stretch away, but heads remained up and a concerted and determined effort led by centre Lauren Tait and wing attack Flora Gillies sparked a remarkable turnaround.
Still one goal down as the timekeeper began the countdown, Peebles made one final frantic break into the shooting D.
Breaths were held as the ball went smoothly through the net, keeping Peebles in the frame as the whistle signalled end of full time, with the teams tied at 29-29.
Three minutes of tense extra time ensued and once again there was nothing between the teams, as reflected in the 30-30 score by the end of period.
The golden goal rule was implemented and steady, accurate passing by Peebles got the ball to Jenny Hudson in the shooting area. Never has a contact error been more welcome as the umpire awarded a penalty shot, the result of a foul on Hudson by the Arbroath goal defence.
The home supporters could only watch with dismay as the Peebles vice captain took aim and lifted the ball cleanly through the net, securing a hard-fought win.

SCOTTISH YOUTH CUP
Peebles Under-15s drew a home game against Perth in their final match of their qualifying section of the Youth Cup.
Both sides were undefeated in the section and with two teams to qualify the match was about determining the section winner to face the easier semi-final against the runners-up in the other section.
Missing one of their key players meant a reshuffle for the Peebles outfit, who battled before time ran out with the final whistle signalling a win for Perth.
Peebles will play either East Kilbride or Paisley in the semi-final.
