Three local netballers were celebrating a superb weekend of competition in Belfast’s Antrim Forum, where they played for Scotland’s U19 team in Netball Europe.
Jo Pettitt, a former Peebles Netball player, now at Strathclyde University, Jenny Hudson and Lauren Tait (both current Peebles Netball players) were selected for the 12-player squad to play in the top section of the competition against England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Jo and Jenny, pairing in goal shooter and goal attack, were Scotland’s starting shooting duo in each of their matches, with Jenny beginning her Netball Europe campaign by securing the first Scottish goal against Wales. After a very close match Wales won by 50 goals to 49.
All three Peebles players were fielded in the starting line-up of seven against England, with Lauren gaining her first international cap in goal keeper producing a storming performance to minimise England’s attack on goal. The loss to England by only 49 goals to 32 after an hour’s play was one of the closest in recent years.
All three players were again selected for play in the final match against hosts, Northern Ireland, and contributed to a dominating performance by Scotland, running our victors by 50 goals to 22.
Jo returns to Scotland to train with the national squad, the Scottish Thistles, where she is still in the reckoning for the Commonwealth Games final team. School girls Jenny (18 years) and Lauren, still only 17 years old, will trial again in June for next season’s Scotland U19 squad.
