YOUNG hockey players from the Borders have been a big hit – one way or another – on the international scene recently.
Playing for the Scotland Under-16 squad, Lucy Ramsay from Kelso High school scored a goal against Germany on her 15th birthday in an international tournament in Mannheim last weekend, while Emily Newlands of Selkirk High, had to be taken to hospital after being hit on the eye playing against Belgium the following day.
Happily, Emily is fine, apart from a right shiner and a couple of steri-strips. The Selkirk youngster has played in all eight of this season’s internationals.
Over last weekend, the girls had a great experience, although the results didn’t exactly go their way – they lost 11-0 to Holland, 10-1 to Germany and 7-0 to Belgium. They were also defeated in their two games against England and lost two, drew one against Wales.
