MELROSE Waverley Tennis Club’s dreams of a Scottish Cup quarter-final spot ended at Linlithgow, after a brave 5-4 defeat.

While the Borderers performed with determination and verve throughout, the West Lothian side emerged as worthy winners.

The match was poised on a knife-edge going into the last of the three rounds, Melrose having battled back from a 2-1 round one deficit to level the match at 3-3 by the end of round two.

With all to play for in round three, Linlithgow won two of the final three games for a 5-4 win.

On the day, number one pairing Cedric Raffier and Glen Gordon carried out their role superbly by securing two wins.

Michael Fairburn and Keith Polson, playing at number two, put in a committed shift to earn one win. And number three couple Mike Turner and Ian Reilly’s gritty performance saw them capture a well-deserved win.
