New developments for the sport in the Borders

THE first meeting of the West and Mid-Borders badminton development squad has been held.

Players from the Galashiels, Hawick, Jedburgh and Kelso area were identified by their coaches for the select squad and under the watchful guidance of Harry Turnbull and Christine Wyllie, the players were put through their paces.

It is hoped these sessions will help more children from the west of the region reach their potential for inclusion into the Borders badminton squads.

Also planned are carnivals in the Hawick, Galashiels and Peebles areas this year, in the hope that more children can be encouraged to take up the
game.

Peebles is also starting up a club at the Gytes Centre and Colin Blaikie of Hawick will be touring schools promoting a curriculum for excellence, so that more teachers can teach badminton.

There will also be the opportunity to attend the Scottish International Championships in Glasgow in November.

The trials for the Borders squads will be on Saturday, September 29, at Berwickshire High for primary children (9.30am to noon) and secondary pupils (6pm to 8pm).

Coaches are asked to select and notify suitable players and interested school-aged pupils should contact their area active schools co-ordinators.
