HOPES of arrowing in on a World title were dashed last week for Kelso youngster Ryan Hogarth.
But at only 19 there is every chance we will be hearing more about the talented teenager in the future. A regular on the local circuit, having played for Kelso British Legion and the area squad, Hogarth qualified for the Winmau World Championships in Hull by winning the Scottish Open Youth Under-21 tournament at Stirling last month. And, after beating Martin Atkins, ranked 29th in the world, was beaten in his second round match by Finnish internationalist Jarkko Komula.
Also playing at the event was Ewan Hyslop from Lockerbie who managed to get to the last 16 – which was played on stage and televised – where he was beaten by eventual winner Scott Waites.
At the same venue on Friday, the Lakeside World Playoffs saw Ewan manage to get through to the last 64 and Ryan made it to the last 16, only two games away from making it to the Lakeside finals in January. A major achievement in his first big event.
