Pat Greenshields, of Melrose Golf Club, has made it through to the National Grand Final of the American Golf Ladies Championship after a sun-baked qualifying competition at Peebles Golf Club.

Joined by playing partner Kathleen Gall, of Baberton Golf Club, the pair will now take their places at Ryder Cup venue The Belfry on September 9-10, to battle it out over the Brabazon Course for the title of best Ladies Pair in the UK.

The duo held on to victory by the narrowest of margins over home club golfers Angela Biscomb and Martha Shortreed, both members of Peebles Golf Club.

Both sets of ladies finished the competition with 42 points, with the locals being edged out on back nine countback.

Taking their place at the finals weekend as third qualifiers will be the second Peebles pair of Margaret Flemming and Sheila Cuthbertson.

“After the success of our 9 Hole and Junior Championships last year, we added the Ladies Championship for 2016,” said Daniel Gathercole, head of marketing at American Golf.

“We’ve been delighted with the amount of ladies taking part and look forward to welcoming all the qualifiers to the Belfry for a wonderful weekend of golf that will end with the crowning of our first-ever Ladies Champions.”

Entry to all the American Golf Championships, including the American Golf Ladies Championship, is free and is part of the nationwide retailer’s drive to promote golf and get more people out playing the game more often.
