Emily Newlands
Emily Newlands

Age: 15

Home Town: Selkirk

Sport: Hockey

Position: Defence/midfield

Club/Team: Borders Fjordhus/Scotland Under-18s

Coaches: Janet Jack, Colin Clarke, Mark Ralph, Karen Cornwall, David Johnstone

Best moment in sport so far: Being selected for the UK School Games, getting player of the match for the Welsh game and being fast-tracked to the Under-18 squad as I am only 15.

Aims for the next 12 months: To be selected for all of this year’s matches for the Under-18s, retain my place in the squad and hopefully reach the European Championships next year.

How does the ASP help you most: Fast-track to physio, nutrition and psychology to help me stay at the top of my game.

Who in sport most inspires you: Alex Danson, GB and England Women’s hockey player.

FavOURITE sporting moment of all time: Jessica Ennis winning her Olympic gold medal in Beijing after leading from the start.

Best thing about your sport: Winning (of course). Competing against other countries, meeting new friends and being part of a great team and club.

... but dislike: Losing! The long journeys to training and early mornings.

If not in this sport, would like to compete in: Athletics. I used to compete on the professional games circuit and run for the TLJT club.

Usual pre-competition meal: Pasta or chicken.

Food dislikes: Chinese or Indian, hot or spicy food.

Best motivational song or track: Lose Yourself by Eminem.

... but turn off/leave the room to: Borders Fjordhus minibus music! They know who they are!

Competition superstition or odd routine: Drink from the same water bottle. Retie my shoe laces before warm-up, during warm up and before the match.

When not competing or training I like to: Any free time I have I like to meet up with friends, but usually have to spend most of the time doing homework and studying.
