BORDERS autocross enthusiasts were given a chance to shine on local soil recently at the Sam Leitch Memorial event held at Whitmuirhaugh Farm near Sprouston, writes Hannah Smith.

The event is run by the Border Ecosse Car Club and despite the bad weather 43 competitors turned out, including 12 juniors ranging from 14-16, with local girl Amy Murray, from Minto, finishing a great seventh in the junior class.

The senior A final held four locals, John Straughan (Branxton), Jim Jones (Chirnside), Scott Hunter (St Boswells) and Matthew Leitch (Norham).

Matthew, son of the late Sam Leitch, continued to pull in crowds and gave them something to enjoy with his fearless, fast and sideways driving. He managed to pick up fastest time of the day, first overall and first in class.

Co-organiser Jackie Neil told TheSouthern: “I would like to thank the competitors for taking part and promoting the club as it allows youngsters to race in a controlled environment instead of on the public roads.”
