WESTRUTHER all-rounder Martin Smith stepped up a notch last weekend when competing in his latest triathlon competition in Annan.
The Earlston High School pupil has previously been competing successfully in the junior boys’ category, but despite being only 14, and having another year in this section, last weekend he decided to try his luck in the senior competition, against the 16+ age group.
This bold move meant that Martin had to shoot from a distance of 10m rather than seven, run an additional 500m and swim for a longer time period.
Although his shoot didn’t quite go according to plan, Martin ran an excellent 2km round a saturated playing field and swam a personal best, finishing a very creditable fifth. His next competition is at Grangemouth in January where he has again entered the 16+ group.
