AT AN overcast Meigle Park, Gala U15s played host to Largo in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup.
Largo won the toss and elected to bowl. Irvine and Halls opened on a slow, damp wicket and found it difficult to score off the excellent Largo bowling. They built up momentum and the runs came steadily but with recent bad weather and the slow pitch, it never looked like being a high-score game. Irvine’s was the first wicket to fall. After hitting a huge six he was bowled next ball for 24.
Pringle joined Halls at the crease and after a short period when a run-out looked a distinct possibility they settled down. Pringle was stumped for 11 trying to push the score on as the home side felt they were a few runs short of a winning score. Halls was also stumped taking a chance for an excellent 35. Hancock two not out and Shaw one not out saw Gala reach a total of 78 for 3.
The Gala side knew they would need to bowl and field well to restrict their visitors.
They picked up their first wicket in the third over when Rutherford caught Fleming off the bowling of Pringle. The next wicket fell in the eighth when Hancock had Coates lbw. In the next over, Halls had Imrie out to an excellent catch by Moir.
It was clear that the game was going to be close. Ormiston took a great caught-and-bowled. In the next over, Moir had MacFarlane lbw but the Largo batsmen scored the winning run with three balls to spare.
