Langholm lifter takes world title

Former Langholm Academy pupil Greg Murray has won the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation championships at Telford while competing for Scotland.

The 43-year-old serves as a Troop Sergeant at the Army Training Regiment, Winchester is the world bench press champion in the 67.5kg weight category, master one age category, and pressed 115kg.

In the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association, he is British bench press champion, record holder in the 67.5kg weight and Masters one age category. He is the army bench press champion (120kg), army masters record holder, combined services bench press record holder (67.5 kg), army Deadlift champion (200kg) and open record holder. He will be competing for Scotland in the European Single Lifts in Italy in September.

Greg’s parents Jimmy and Jennie still live in Langholm while sister Karen is in Hawick.

During his school years he ran on the Borders Games circuit in the youths events over 800 and 1600 metres.
