THE South Schools Indoor Hockey Tournament took place at the Queens Centre, Galashiels, and was, as usual, very keenly contested.

Section A comprised Galashiels Academy, Berwickshire High School, Earlston High School and Kelso High School, while Section B included Peebles High School, Kelso High School A, Selkirk High School and, due to a last-minute withdrawal, a young Kelso High School C team made up the draw.

Kelso High School A and B teams both topped their sections with three wins apiece, while Galashiels Academy and Selkirk High School were runners-up in their respective sections.

In the first semi-final, Selkirk proved too strong for Kelso’s B team and won this encounter 3-0.

In the other semi, Kelso were pressing strongly when the Academy’s Nicola Laing sustained an injury to her face and had to leave the pitch.

When the match resumed, it was Gala who got a quick break, which Rhona Gowans was able to convert into the first goal of the match and put her team into the lead.

At the other end, Joanna Cavaroli in goal was proving hard to get past, despite continual pressure, but eventually Lucy Ramsay and then Claire Hill scored to put Kelso ahead.

Captain Kirsty Veitch then put the game beyond reach with a goal from a penalty corner, to ensure Kelso ran out winners by 3-1.

The final was then a repeat of an earlier sectional tie, where Kelso had defeated Selkirk, and, despite strong resistance from the latter, the Tweedsiders again won this encounter by the same scoreline of 5-0, with goals from Kirsty Veitch, Lucy Ramsay, Gina Ramsay and Claire Hill (2), to retain the trophy.
