The final of the annual (handicapped) knockout competition at Gala Squash Club may have been delayed due to holidays, but it was well worth waiting for.

In one of the most hotly-contested matches outside of the Commonwealth Games, Joe Eyre (+1) finally picked up the trophy after almost one hour of hard-fought rallies against Ruaridh Kohler (-1).

The pair were evenly matched right from the start and the first game went all the way to sudden death before Kohler took it 17-15. Eyre served his way to the second game 15-7 and scraped the third 15-13, to open a 2-1 lead. But Kohler came roaring back to win the fourth 15-13 and take the match into a deciding game.

By now, both players were showing signs of tiredness, but it was Eyre that looked the freshest and pulled away in the middle of the decider, and deservedly took it 15-10.

“I had to keep going for every ball – it was the final, after all,” he said immediately after the match.

The plate competition, played previously, was won by Luis Molero.

The club is also running ladies’ nights on Tuesdays, see www.gsrc.org.uk for more.
