Borders triathlete Jenny Nel (formerly Close) has qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, in October – thanks to a magnificent win in South Africa.
In February, TheSouthern reported that the former eventer, who now resides in Cape Town, had won her age category in a half Ironman competition in her adopted homeland. And last week she went one further when winning the full Ironman South Africa title for her 35-39 year old age group.
Jenny, whose deep-section Enve wheels bike is sponsored by Chris Strickland from Celtic Bicycle Wheels in Jedburgh, said: “I was pleased with my performance overall and loved every minute, although, in hindsight, I should have maybe pushed a little bit harder.”
The former St Mary’s (Melrose) pupil completed a gruelling non-stop 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile run in 11 hours 19 minutes and 30 seconds to win.
“Those last 2kms were awesome, the most amazing feeling,” she added.
